Reflection - Wednesday, February 17

Today students chose and began working with monologues from the repertoire of dramatic literature. These scenes included ones from the following plays.

Gamlet - Edmond by David Mamet
Martin - Waiting for Godot by Samual Beckett
Max - The Boy Who Ate the Moon by Jane Martin
Onur - The Zykovs by Maxim Gorky
Mike - Jack and Jill by Jane Martin
Sam - The Taking of Miss Janie by Ed Bullins
Anne-Mieke - The Web by Eugene O'Neill
Sara - The Hairy Ape by Eugene O'Neill
Evelina - The Danube by Maria Irene Fornes
Christina - Moonlight by Harold Pinter
Siri - Victory on Mrs. Dandywine's Island by Lanford Wilson
Silke - A Man's World by Rachel Crothers

For homework tonight, please look up your play on wikipedia so that you have a little more of an idea of who your character is and what he/she is doing for when we meet again Monday. If you weren't in class today, please be sure to pick a monologue for yourself.

  1. REFLECTION - Sara Welander

Today we didn't do that much except for only studying our monologues and trying to learn the lines. And for the others they had to pick out their monologues. I chose 'The Hairy Ape'. I chose it because it had very beautiful and descriptive language in it and would be pretty interesting to act out. I also understood it pretty well which i couldn't do with most of the other monologues. They were pretty confusing. But 'The Hairy Ape' made more sense to me and i could connect to it, understanding what Mildred was saying and how she felt. That is pretty much why I chose it. All i need to do now is research a bit about the play to know why the monologue was in it and to know more about the character and her time on the ocean liner.

  2. This lesson we didn't do so much, because half of the class didn't pick their monologues(not blaming anyone) so we spent a lesson choosing them and then we started reading them out.
The monologue i chose was "The Danube", basically it is a woman 20-30 years old, in the garden talking ot her lover that they need to break up even though she doesn't want it to happen.
When i researched the information, i didn't find so much. What i got was that paul had to choose between career(Eve's dad), and Eve. So they marry, and there is somehting about health insurance so they faint on purpose and then freeze. Doesn't make sense to me, but if you want to read a short summary here is the link: http://www.mariairenefornes.com/plays1980s/thedanube.html
I also chose it because the character's name was Eve, and because it is written like a poem, maybe it is a poem, but te one that doesn't rhyme. Also i found the monologue easy, because it was very clear how to act.
In general i enjoyed this lesson, now what i need to do is start learning lines.

  3. During this lesson we had to learn our monologues which we have chosen over the health week holidays. I have chosen the monologue 'Moonlight' and i basically, had to read through it for this lesson. However for next lesson it is important to start learning the lines and becoming better at memorizing the monologue.

My character is called Bridget who wanders quietly through her parents' house on the night when her father dies. She speaks about how she was invited to the party that her mother or father told her. She has to go to the party alone and got told that the party would not start until the moonlight will light up and shine brightly. She then goes into the house but it is dark and all the windows were dark, there was no sound and the stood there waiting for the moon to go down.
I enjoyed this monologue alot and that why i chose it.

  4. During this lesson we had to learn our monologues. SOme people did them but many didnt. I didnt do it so with many other people we had to look at the monologeus and pick out the one we thought we would like the most.

I chose the monologue The boy who ate the moon simply becuase its funny silly strange and i can act it out. I love acting out funny peices as it makes me feel normal!!!! hhaaha joke. I picked it also because it would have been fun for me to do it. I hope that my character, me, and the kid do well.

The boy who ate the moon is about a mentally disorderd kid who is going to a doctors office as he think he ate a new moon
He claims to have eaten a little growing moon and he thinks it wiill grow inside of him. He goes off topic alot but finally gets to the point. He talks about heat rain and many silly things all related to the moon 'inside of him'

I hope it will be a fun peice to act out as it is hillarious.

  5. Today in the lesson we went through our repetoire monologues. I picked Victory on Mrs. Dandywine's island because it looked quite funny to me. It is an old lady describing HERSELF to a guest on an island. I think I can bring in a little dress and walk round very pompous to pull off this character. I enjoyed running through them though. I think the main issue I might have however is learning the lines because its quite long and difficult. I am determined to try though.
