Exam Revision Homework #4 - More Romeo and Juliet!

DUE BEFORE EXAM WEEK!

On your end-of-year drama exam, you will be asked to write about your work in class this year. One important area of work in our class this term was on Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo an Juliet. Please write a 15-20 minute essay answering the following question.

Next year, you will need to submit one piece of "repertoire" group work as IGCSE coursework. Since in your literature class, you will be continuing to work with Romeo and Juliet, it is likely that some of your classmates will want to further develop some scene other than Act 3, Scene 1 from Romeo and Juliet for this coursework. If you were to develop another Romeo and Juliet scene into a coursework piece, what would you do? Try to be as detailed as possible in your answer. What would be your ideal cast for such a scene? (Who would play what roles?) Why? What advice would you give to the actors playing each of these roles? etc.

  1. If I were o choose other Romeo and Juliet scene I would love to do he balcony scene, I think it is act 2 scene 1. I would put people in couples, like boy girl, without making girls play boys or boys play girls. It is a good scene I think, my favourite one actually. It has got quite a few monologues and monologues are easier to develop than scripts. I think that this scene is so emotional you need to play your best to make it good. I would also do it because it is between two people which is much easier to work on because you are always involved. Ofcourse we would need to think about costumes and makeup and this sort of stuff but I think it would be good. The other one which is also good is when romeo sees juliet is dead, and this is quite an emotional one too, and it is also between two actors. The advise I would give is not to be shy, especially next year for those who are new it would be hard, new people, new everything, because I look back to when we had our first classess, and going on the stage was somehting super brave to do, whereas now it is normal and everybody enjoys it.

  2. The scene that I would love to do is the scene that everything goes wrong! It sounds stupid but that is really the scene where it is really exciting to see what happens and why. The scene is: Friar Lawrence sends his messenger to go to Romeo and that he went to slow and then that romeo’s messenger goes more fast and that Romeo hears that Julies dead the scene ends when he takes the poison and when Juliet wakes up! Romeo and Friar Lawrence and the two messengers should be played by boys and Juliet by a girl!
The props are easy for friar Lawrence bald Painting and fake hair his clothes just a blanket around him :P. Romeo just normal clothes, Juliet a dress and a blanket so that you can see she is dead. The messenger should be the same on running and the one from Friar Lawrence walking!!
It would be a bit difficult to play but I think it would be awesome to play!!!!!!

  3. I would chose the scene with the nurse, mother and Juliet. I think that would be a really fun scene to do. I would want to be the nurse because I think my personality would suit it because the nurse seems to not really know her place and is a bit of a hyperactive weirdo who gets over excited about stuff. I would cast Evelina as the mother because she seems like a character who is firm but enjoys a good joke ( the mother not Evelina ) . I would cast Samantha as Juliet because Samantha is well known for the character ( a confused innocent lover girl who wants a happily ever after (thats Juliet not Samantha) ). I would make the scene set up so that it was a bedroom, I wouldn't use chairs because that always looks unprepared and rushed to me. I would use maybe some boxes or tables with sheets. I would have a table with makeup and the like in the 'corner'. For costumes I would have the mother in a bath robe with her hair up in a towel because she is preparing for her party. I would have the nurse in a sort of made outfit with a black dress with an apron on because that shows she is a nurse but she doesn't act like it. I would have Juliet in either a bath robe as well or in a simple night dress. I would probably have the mother fussing around the room preparing as well as sometimes sitting down with Juliet to talk about Paris. The nurse would probably be fussing over Juliet and would be brushing her hair and when she got too excited walk upstage leaving the hair brush in Juliet's hair (which should get a chuckle or two) or maybe accidentally pulling Juliet's hair and Juliet screaming really dramatically . It would be an interesting scene to direct , but everyone would HAVE to know their lines so we could play around with the hands and do other things other then standing holding scripts.

  4. The scene i would love to do is the party scene, where Romeo and Juliet first meet because alot happens, with alot of different charecters.

The costumes would be amazing, as it was all fancy dress with big dresses, and colourfull masks so it would be really interesting and the scene would be that of a party, banners, ballons, food, happy guest etc..

I would want to be Juliet for the scene, as I've never really played a really girl girl before. I'd cast Onur to be Romeo because he played romeo well before. I'd cast Lady Capulet as Sara, Tybalt as Martin, The Nurse as Siri and Sir Capulet as Mike and Paris as Luke.

Everyone would need to learn all their lines to perfection and everyone would have to be very well in charecter ,to make it awsome :D !

  5. If I would have to develop another scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ it would be the scene where Juliet’s mom tells Juliet that she is to be married with Paris that Thursday. Juliet’s mom becomes shocked and angry when she sees how negatively affected Juliet is of this yelling and screaming at her mother. But when her father comes in it gets more dramatic and he throws Juliet on the floor scowling at her, ordering her to marry Paris. Afterwards when juliet’s parents leave the maid tries to convince Juliet that it is a good idea to marry Paris. The scene ends with Juliet saying her last line before the scene where she rushes to friar Lawrence meeting her fiancĂ© there as well.

The actors/actresses in this scene include Juliet, her mom, her dad and the maid. It is set in Juliet’s room. The cast I would have would obviously be that they would act as their own genders meaning three actresses would be needed, and then only one male actor playing the dad.

He who is playing Juliet’s father needs to have a fast transition of moods. First entering the door satisfied and joyful but when noticing how his daughter is crying and hearing that she doesn’t want to marry Paris, juliet’s father grows so angry that he threatens Juliet almost hitting her. The female actress playing the maid would have a very protective, caring personality and when noticing how juliet’s father throws Juliet on the floor she runs to help Juliet up. Juliet’s mother should not have an as angered characteristic as Juliet’s father but she expresses her anger quietly by not saying a thing to Juliet, or even looking at her after her father leaves. Her mother needs to look ashamed of Juliet. Juliet herself needs a strong sense of emotion, in the break of awful tears. She needs to be screaming, yelling and sobbing throughout this scene to show her extreme sadness of having to marry another man when she’s already married to the love of her life. Juliet’s part is the most important in this scene.

  6. A really fun scene to do would be when the Montague’s enter into the party of the Capulets. I didn’t really like the new version of the party but we could work something out. It would be really funny and romantic as Romeo is puzzled and then suddenly he sees Juliet, not knowing who she is and falls in love. Firstly we would need a huge set. A nice big set with lots of colours and flowers and all sorts of ornaments. Also we would need masks as it is a masked party. There will be many different and unique costumes and everyone will be wearing either a dress or some sort of old fashioned suit or outfit… There will also need to be many party food and balloons and also lots and lots of fun.

The person who would be Romeo should be a strong yet sensitive man, well boy, who can act very well and be a very emotional person. Juliet would be harder to find. There would need to be a girl with a stare that can stun a man and with an amazing character that represents a girl in love. Tybalt I guess would be a strong and angry character who gets very emotional very quickly. Lady Capulet must be a very motherly character and Mercutio and Benvolio must be very playful and funny. The nurse character would best be played by a very excited person who has a very funny character. And last but not least a Paris, who is a very hansom character, but not the guy for Juliet.

  7. A scene I might choose to do would be when the Montagues enter the Capulet party. I would have it done somewhere where there are stone walls to represent the castle walls. I would have the characters dressed up in slightly formal costuming and with masks to fit the occasion.

I’m not sure who I’d like to have in the scene character wise. However, I would have Romeo as a person that is very reluctant to go further and is slightly nervous. I would have Mercutio as a confident joker. I would have Benvolio as like a follower to Mercutio and I’d have a few other people following the group.

The group will be running around the area listening to the jokes Mercutio tells. They will be laughing a lot and will often be circling him.

I think that this scene could look very funny and can be very effectively performed.

  8. If i were to choose Romeo and Juliet as my course work piece, i would definitely want to use it however, there for i would want to re-video this scene if any people want to re-video this again. it has been a pleasure working on this scene but to make it even better than it is, i would want to use more props and costuming and make up in order to complete this scene properly. And make it definitely OFF BOOK!

  9. If i had to pick Romeo and Juliet as my course work piece, I wouldn’t mind using it but, therefore i would want to re-film this scene if anybody wants to re-film it. it has been stressful working on this scene but to make it even better than it is, i would want to use more props and costuming and make up in order to complete this scene properly.

  10. Exam Revision #4:

If I had to choose one scene that could be acted out really well by our class, I would choose the scene that is near the end, when Romeo is told that Juliet is dead. I would choose this scene because it is really dramatic, and if acted out well it can be extremely good, so I would need good actors.

There are not many characters in this scene (Only 3), but that doesn't matter. As Romeo, for some reason, I would choose Siri. Even though she's a girl, I can really see her doing this scene by acting sad and crazy. As the guy who tells Romeo, it really doesn't make a difference who does it, because he only has a few lines. I would also need a citizen who just looks at them, so it doesn't matter who gets that role either.
