Exam Revsion Homework #1 - Romeo and Juliet

DUE BEFORE EXAM WEEK!

On your end-of-year drama exam, you will be asked to write about your work in class this year. One important area of work in our class this term was on Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo an Juliet. Please write a 15-20 minute essay answering the following question.

Next year, you will need to submit one piece of "repertoire" group work as IGCSE coursework. It is likely that some of your classmates will want to further develop Act 3, Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet for this coursework. If you were to develop this scene into a coursework piece, what would you do? Try to be as detailed as possible in your answer. What would be your ideal cast for such a scene? (Who would play what roles?) Why? What advice would you give to the actors playing each of these roles? etc.

  1. If I were to develop Romeo and Juliet scene next year, I would change the cast ofcourse. I would make it a male scene, because I think that it is very hard for girls to play guys, and at the end of the day guys are still better at playing guys without using much of an effort. I would also make sure that everybody knows their lines, set deadlines but not knowing everything, I would make people break their speeches up in like five pieces, this way people would not leave everyhting ot the last minute. Also be harsher, this year many people did not put as much effort because of the kindness of he teacher I think. To make it coursework we would need to think about make up and costumes and props. Make sure that everyone has the same style costumes, preferable saw them all together from the material. Make day makeup appropriate for males and appropriate for lighning of the stage. Make or find good props, such as swords which are not going to break. In whole to make this scene good you need to put a lot of effort in it, not rely on other people.

  2. Revision.
To start developing the scene from Romeo and Juliet I would do some things really different. I would choose the people who wants to play the character that we choose and I would do the male characters in the scenes be played by the males. the guys needs to play the guys, and the girls needs to play the girl. I think that would be better and more realistic.
The lines is difficult to learn for some people and I would record it in 3 pieces that they don’t need to learn everything in once so for example for tomorrow know this and for Monday know the other piece. Everyone needs to know their lines first before we begin I would start early with rehearsing the lines.
Then I would plan how they have to stand and how they need to react to make it realistic! The props everyone needs to bring what they need to look like their character they would need to watch movie’s and read their lines and look at them closely like what does my character mean with that? Etc..
Make-up for Juliet isn’t really necessary we need to let her look young. The light and the stage would go later also different scenes like the guys on the street needs to be played on different stages….

I think the thing what we need is REALITY. It’s a lot but I think it would go perfectly.

  3. As Mercutio I would perfect many aspects to make my performance a lot better.

I would firstly learn my lines better so I know them like the back of my hand. I will then try to figure out ways to act more like Mercutio. An example would be trying to act like I’m telling jokes.

I would also think deeply about costuming. I think that I would need to look funny but not over the top funny. I would mess about more with the characters, maybe being a bit annoying.

Finally, I will try to act better when I’m in pain after being stabbed but still very humorous. This will probably be a bit difficult as I’d have to remember to do a lot of things at once. But I would try hard.

Once I have mastered Mercutio, I’d pick out the right cast. These people would have hopefully done the same as me to save us time. We would then rehearse our scene until it’s at a point where it is coursework worthy. On the performance day we’d have props, costumes and a decent setting.

  4. If I were to develop ROMEO AND JULIET ACT 3 SCENE 1 into a coursework piece I would definitely work more on our staging. Especially for the sword fighting scenes since when we did it went pretty fast not giving much time for the audience to realize what exactly is going on. I would also work on our voices if girls were to act as boys we would have to lower our voice to sound more ‘macho’. We as well need to say the shakespearian language/phrases in a slower more flowing kind of way since just saying it is not enough for this sort of play.

The cast members I would have would be for sure that guys would play the man parts, even though these include most of them except for perhaps lady capulet, citizen and montague but these parts do not have many lines. If an actress could and chose to, she could play a man part. But it would be her choice. For the main parts like tybalt, mercutio, benvolio, and romeo the person would need to be able to memorize lines easily, have a slow, clear, dramatic voice. Face expressions are as well important here and being serious about the scene. The actors/actresses would also have a well-creative mind to experiment with his/her acting skills making it more interesting.

For the actor/actress playing tybalt, he/she needs to have a stuck-up, manly sort of voice. They must act as they are the most dangerous person in Verona and walk boldly along. People acting mercutio must have a very clear slow voice to express the jokes very clearly. If you talk too fast you won’t get the jokes. The person also needs to work on ways to look like the comical one, acting out what he says e.g. when he mentions minstrels the actor should jump around, pretend to play a flute imitating a minstrel that way. This will make the audience understand mercutio’s character more easily. Romeo needs to be giddy and happy when he enters the stage as he would have just married Juliet at the time and have a joyful nature. But after tybalt kills mercutio romeo would grow completely mad. So this actor needs an easy way of changing his moods and make them clear to the audience. Benvolio needs a worried quite tender personality. He needs to show the audience that he never wanted this to happen and after mercutio dies and romeo kills tybalt he needs to act like the saddest worried man in Verona. Both of his best friends are gone from his life. It is important that he makes this clear to the audience.

  5. If I were to redo the scene my own way , I would change the cast. I would leave Martin as Benvolio because I thought he was funny, I would put Max as the civilian because I think he woud do the single line well and funny too :D . I would cast Onur as Romeo still because he played it well , the clueless character who was happy at the beginning and was convinced he was innocent. I really liked Gamlet as Tybalt, he played an angry, insolent teenager well but he would have to use more emotion and take it seriously or I would take out the flyswatter :D . For Lady Capulet I would cast Sam because in the past she has played ladies who are distressed well and I think it would suit her. For Mercutio I would cast Luke because I thought he was really funny and got the jokes, however he would have to speak much more slowly and clearly so to be understandable. For the Prince I would cast Evelina because she is good when she wants to be at playing a leader and she is good with emotion. I would cast Christina as Montague because she is a woman of few words but I am sure that she would say those lines with convincing emotion enough to try to convince the Prince not to kill her son. If I were to direct it I would make the sword fights more elaborate and better choreographed and would use better sword props. I would also make sure everyone had similar costumes that suited the scene , I quite like the idea of the modern Romeo & Juliet so wouldn't go all out to make everyone wear tights but I would need people wearing pre-arranged clothes, so not to look so unorganized. For make up I would make sure that the girls playing men looked like men and the boys looked their ages for whoever the character they were playing.

  6. If i had to improve the romeo and juliet scene i would firstly start off with filming in outside, where we could run around and it might look more real. I'd add good costumes and much better props like swords and everyone would wear fancy costumes like tights and fancy dresses for the women. The make-up would have to be done aswell, especially when it comes to girls playing boys or vise-versa. My ideal cast for the piece would be Onur as Romeo, as he play's the part very well and is an amazing actor (when he knows all his lines). I'd cast Siri as Benvolio because he matches her charecter, the honest peace maker person. I'd put Mike for Mercutio ( if he learnt all his lines) because when he pays attention he works incredibly well. Evelina would be Lady Capulet because in our scene she played her very well, gently and very femine of course. I'd cast Tybalt as myself, because I think Tybalt's epic and finally the prince would be Martin.

  7. Presuming I were to develop the very Romeo and Juliet, Act 3 Scene 1 for a coursework piece, I would need a lot of work to be done to perfect the piece as best as possible. A thing I would definitely work on the blocking of the scene, vocal projection, costuming, and props. The most important key point in acting is blocking. Without blocking you might as well not even do the scene. The actors will all need to block properly and stay in the right place at the right time. This will make the play interesting to watch. Another point is props. The props we used were, well, not even there. We will need to use prop swords that look like real swords and we will need to perfect the sword scene. I almost forgot, people will need to learn their lines before all of this happens. Costuming is a very important part of the play as people need to tell the difference between Capulets and Montagues and they will need to know that it is happening in Shakespearean time not nowadays, except of course if the play is made so that it is a newer version of Romeo and Juliet, like the play we just finished watching in class.

Projection will need to be very clear and people will need to be able to hear the actors from very far away, so that all the audience can hear the play. Another thing is that there needs to be a visible distinction between the different characters. For example, Romeo needs to be a romantic yet tragic man with a desperate problem, whilst Tybalt needs to be handsome and strong yet sensitive. They must be distinguishable.

  8. This scene would be great used if we had the change to re-video each other and make this scene stronger. It would help us very much to make it better looking and perfect.

Costuming is a very important aspect in this scene as it is old fashioned and it would make the scene greatly understandable and more like it if costumes will be used.

Also, make up will be great help in this scene to use it to make Romeo and the other characters more like them in real life as in the scene to create a great picture for the scene.

Stage direction is also something we would need to be using as it would create more movement to the picture and help improve grades for the scene!

  9. If i had to perk up the romeo and juliet scene i would first start off with filming outside, where we could have more space to act and it might look more realistic. I'd add better costumes and better props such as swords and everybody would wear old style costumes like tights and big dresses for the women. The make-up would have to be done aswell, especially when it comes to girls playing boys or the other way around. My perfect cast for the piece would be Onur as Romeo, as he played the part well and is a great actor. I'd put Siri as Benvolio because he matches her personality. I'd make sam as Mercutio because she works really well. christina would be Lady Capulet because in our scene she played her very well, lightly and very womanly of course. I'd cast Tybalt as me, because I think Tybalt's got a cool kind of character and finally the prince would be Martin I think because he is a very good speaker and actor.

  10. Exam Revision #1:

As Romeo I would cast Max because when I watched him act as Romeo in his scene I thought he was good. As Juliet, I would cast Christina because she is calm but she can also be very hyper and crazy which is perfect for Juliet’s role. As Friar Laurence, I would cast Mike because he looks like he could make weird potions and stuff. As Juliet’s nurse, I would cast Evelina because she can be really loud and also act crazy. As Tybalt, I would cast Gamlet, because he is good at acting mad when he wants to. As Mercutio, I would cast Luke because Luke always jokes around a lot so he would fit Mercutio’s character in the script perfectly. As Benvolio, I would cast myself probably, because I would be good at being the peace-maker. As Juliet’s father, I would cast Martin because he can be really loud which would suit this role, and as Juliet’s mother, I would cast Anne-mieke because she can be really loud and immature just like Juliet’s mother is.
